Hypnosis is a state of relaxed awareness, it is a state of human consciousness that involves the individuals focused attention, a reduction in their peripheral awareness, and openness of their enhanced capacity to respond to suggestions. You will be physically relaxed but mentally alert. In this state your subconscious mind is most receptive to hypnotic suggestion.
You are in full control throughout. Hypnosis has been demonstrated in numerous studies and scientific research world-wide as an effective treatment form for a multitude of issues. In hypnosis you become very aware of your surroundings and your powers of focus and concentration are greatly enhanced. The use of hypnosis in therapeutic terms is hypnotherapy.
For a more formal definition
- Webster defines hypnosis as “a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject” and “any of various conditions that resemble sleep.” This definition is consistent with how most people think of hypnosis, but it’s only part of the picture.
- “Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. It is characterized by an increased ability to produce desirable changes in habit patterns, motivations, self-image and life style. Alterations may be produced in physiological functions, such as pain, that are usually inaccessible to psychological influence.” – Clinical Hypnosis Principles and Applications by Crasilneck & Hall.
- “Hypnosis is not a ‘state,’ but rather a ‘descriptive abstraction’ referring to a number of interrelated and overlapping processes.” –Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis by Kroger.
Hypnotherapy can be a very powerful way of helping you get more out of life. It’s a relaxing and safe process that most clients find quite enjoyable. It involves being placed into a light, medium or deep trance that allows us to work with your unconscious mind to create and suggest new outcomes for you e.g. stopping smoking / being more confident etc.
Not all hypnosis is done with your eyes shut. In fact, the majority of treatments are done with your eyes fully open and it appears as if you are just having a conversation. You hear everything during a trance and are always in control.
The unconscious mind is the source of many of our problems and self-image, it is the part of your mind where automatic habits behaviours are located. Our beliefs, habits and behaviours are stored as information, just like in a computer. The unconscious is a tremendous reservoir of our unrecognised strengths and knowledge.
Hypnosis is a natural and effective technique for accessing the unconscious mind - the key to unleashing our potential, changing our unwanted habits and behaviours and finding solutions to our problems and concerns.
