Depression types:

These types vary according to severity of the symptoms they present, their prevalent features and duration. There is a publication DSM by the American Psychiatric Assoc. describing the criteria for mental health disorders. The manual section within the Diagnostic and Statistics is related to Mental Disorders (DSM) and documents most types and varieties of depression.

Depressive disorders cause significant distress to the individual or impair individuals functioning within the work or school / educational environment. DSM indicates medication or drugs cannot cause the symptoms of depression.

Clinical depression:

This type of depression is known as major depression or major depressive disorder. Clinical depression is the most sever of all the types of depression; this is due to more of the symptoms being present at any given time all at one time in comparison to other types. Clinical depression is diagnosed when there are usually at least five symptoms present in the same time for a period of two weeks or more. This state may only occur once in a person’s life and may reoccur after the initial episode.

Postnatal depression:

Postnatal depression is treatable; it is an imbalance / disorder. Usually occurs two to five days after childbirth, affecting 10% to 15% of mothers. The symptoms are similar to other disorders, ranging from very mild cases of 'baby blues' to postnatal psychosis known to be a severe disorder.
